Terrazzo Epoxy Floors Benefits

The timeless beauty of tradition cement-based terrazzo has captivated builders and artisans alike since its conception by the Venetians in the 1500’s. However, with more than 70% of the current terrazzo market switching to terrazzo epoxy floors, it is quickly replacing traditional cement-based terrazzo.

With a 40-year life expectancy, terrazzo epoxy floors are the top choice for designers, architects, builders and homeowners alike. They also offer outstanding durability and wear, making them the ideal choice for use in high-traffic commercial, industrial, and retail establishments.

Terrazzo epoxy floors are a popular choice for high traffic locations such as:

  • Stores and shopping malls
  • Schools & Universities
  • Food processing plants
  • Cafeterias & Commercial kitchens
  • Chemical processing plants
  • Convention centers
  • Airports
  • Amusement parks
  • Hospitals
  • Laboratories & Pharmaceutical plants

Epoxy Terrazzo vs. Regular Cement-Based Terrazzo

Epoxy terrazzo offers a beautiful floor finish with many advantages over regular cement-based terrazzo:

More Design options – Epoxy terrazzo can accommodate a wider variety of colorful aggregates such as marble or granite flakes, recycled glass and many synthetic materials.

Lower Maintenance Costs

Less Prone to Cracking.

Faster turnaround – The epoxy resin cures overnight and polishing can start the very next day, allowing faster project delivery. Traditional terrazzo usually needs up to seven days to completely dry out before polishing can be started.

Lighter Weight – Epoxy terrazzo weighs only 3 pounds per square foot compared to the much heavier cement-based terrazzo.

Other benefits of epoxy terrazzo include:

  • Abrasion, stain and chemical resistance
  • High impact & shock resistance
  • Does not shrink, permitting installation of larger monolithic sections
  • The colors are permanent and will not fade
  • Anti- bacterial, mold and mildew resistant
  • Seamless surface allowing minimal maintenance
  • Extreme durability provides long term savings on maintenance costs

Terrazzo Epoxy Floors Design Options

terrazzo floor patternTerrazzo epoxy floors offer limitless color and design possibilities. This allows the creation of beautiful layouts and elaborate floor artwork.

The epoxy itself can be tinted any color. This includes vivid colors like reds and blues or pastel shades. The decorative inlaid aggregate can either compliment or contrast the epoxy base resulting in unlimited styles to compliment any space.

Divider strips are used to separate the different colors and create very unique layouts. This includes borders, logos, and complex geometrical designs. They are available in brass, zinc and plastic, and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. They can also be placed at concrete slab expansion joints to prevent cracks in the terrazzo flooring due to regular movement of the concrete substrate. Some contractors may even use artists to lay out the design directly on the floor. The terrazzo installer can then lay out the strips directly over the design.
